Where should I move? college town w/o the college?

My best friend and I are about to graduate college with a business administration and a nursing degree. We're looking for somewhere that is like a college town, but with out the college. Looking for culture and art, great music scene, and tons of outdoor things to do. We also have a large dog so a pet friendly city would be grand. Also, a place that isn't completely overpriced. Looking to spend no more than $1,000 on rent.
