Are we starting to reach a cost vs. effectiveness barrier with technology?

In the medical field, if we were manufacturing those expensive machines instead of them being manufactured in China and Europe, there wouldn't be a problem. But what happens to a system when you are selling cheap stuff and buying expensive?
